Literally. Every day. Threatening him, guilt-tripping him, trying to bribe him or shame him. I have been down to his school to talk to the administration multiple times over this. And EVERY SINGLE TIME I bring them the supreme court ruling on my phone and I remind them he has a constitutional right to NOT participate.
It never matters. They say “Oh, well, then he should just sit quietly” and I say THAT’S WHAT HE WAS DOING, and they say “Okay then.” And the next day he comes home and says, “Mom, today one of the teachers told me her son is in the army and I’m insulting her son by not standing for the pledge.”
This is an eleven-year-old they’re talking to this way. And he was the one who made this choice. He said he sees too much inequality in the world, and too many people in America are treated as sub-human, for him to want to chant ‘liberty and justice for all’ like it’s already happened. I didn’t make the decision for him. He said, “Do I HAVE to participate? Because I don’t think it’s right” and I said I’d support him whatever his decision was. And we’ve been fighting this guerrilla war with the administration ever since.
Just because something didn’t happen to you, specifically, doesn’t mean it doesn’t happen. How about you stop acting like your experiences are universal, all three of you up there.

I remember one time I was in the office waiting for my mom to bring me a shirt because I had a really bad nose bleed and mine was destroyed. Mind you I’m wearing a white shirt which now has a lot of blood on it. I did not feel well and did not stand for the national anthem. And an administrator in the office who I had never met told me I was being disrespectful and should be standing from the pledge. Lectured me until I forced her to acknowledge how much blood I had lost.
I’ve seen teachers stop class and lecture in front of the class or make everyone CONTINUE to stand until a student who was quietly sitting stands.
it doesn’t matter if it’s ‘unconstitutional’ to force someone, it happens anyway. Doesn’t matter if you go to the principal to complain if the principal feels the same way as the teacher. Doesn’t matter if you go to the school officer, or the police, or the news, or the anything else if they all think the same.

When we lived in El Paso, my husband did volunteer work for him (mostly number crunching). Beto is out every day trying to reach the people of Texas and let them know he’s there for them. He’s a genuinely nice man who is passionate about making changes for the better. He’s not just ‘the better of two evils’ when it comes to him or Ted Cruz; he’s legit trying to get some gun reform, better the lives of minorities, and is avidly opposed to the child internment camps of latino immigrants and asylum seekers (one of them is 30mins outside of El Paso and Beto went to spend time there and talk to the kids… that was a really hard day for him).
I would strongly encourage everyone in Texas to learn more about him and his stance of issues (that hyperlink above). Make an informed decision and then get out and vote!! My husband and I don’t live in Texas anymore otherwise we’d both be out there in November.
As I get older I’m finding that a lot of the “intellectuals” I used to admire are actually just condescending and pretentious. And also realizing how much more important it is to be present, considerate, and empathetic because nobody really knows what they’re talking about and anyone who claims to know everything about anything is feeding you bs.

Unpopular fact: minimum wage was created because working men and women in this nation fought–figuratively in the negotiating room and literally in the streets–for a fair working wage, with sweat and blood and tears and death.
Unpopular fact: military service personnel are not the only people who have fought and died for your rights as American: labor leaders and common workers laid down their lives so that you could have a 40 hour work week instead of 80 hours; so you could have a 2 day weekend instead of none; so you could have lunch and bathroom breaks instead of going hungry and shitting your pants,; so you could have a three day weekend in September.
Capitalism would NEVER dole out basic human decency without literal human sacrifice.
Additional unpopular fact: the minimum wage jobs “meant for highschoolers” require as much effort, dedication, and skill as the “big boy/girl jobs” that are supposedly worthy of higher wages. Minimum wage jobs can entail customer service, resource and supply management, staff coordination, multitasking, adherence to strict health and safety regulations, physical and mental endurance, extended hours, high intensity rush periods, and unpredictable situations of any stripe. Treating jobs like they’re worthy of less compensation because the worker wears a plastic nametag instead of a tailored suit is classism and labor devaluation at its most insidious.
Also just because someone is a teenager doesn’t mean their labour doesn’t have value? They are doing the same work but you can pay them less.

Both come from a conservative mindset that neglects the impact that a toxic work culture can have on society.
A 80+ hour work week in order to maintain financial stability isn’t exactly a solid ground to date people and eventually build a family from a healthy relationship.
A workforce comprised of 20 somethings that make between 20-40k a year in entry positions isn’t a good ground to build a reliable consumer base when a huge chunk of that is going to rent, utilities, car payments, and student loans.

I am convinced that, in general, people want to have families. Many, if not most, would be happy to raise children. But in order to have children and raise them, especially to do so well, people need happy, stable relationships, financial security and time to devote to – you know – actually raising the child. You need both money and time to do that.
If people are not given the time and means to be able to create social connections and strong relationships, to devote to parenthood and family, then they are not going to do it. How can they?
