i don’t know if this is common knowledge or not but anne frank’s diary was not some random document that sprang into existence by accident, she fully intended to publish it and she was actively revising it for publication at the time of her arrest, she desperately wanted to be an author when she grew up and she left behind a substantial amount of fiction (several short stories, a novel in progress) when she died. her diary was not a private stream of consciousness, like, she was writing to communicate with other people and to create a work of literature. there are unabridged editions available which are less polished and include passages that she and her father originally struck from the record, but the most widely available version, probably the one you read, was carefully edited and revised both by her and, after her death, her father.
she intended to publish her diary and the tales of life from the secret annexe in response to a call from a minister in the government-in-exile: the minister *wanted* people – including Jewish people – to come forward with their stories of life under occupying forces specifically to show that they did not lose their essential humanity, even when the night was long and dark and cruel and horrifying.
so she redid the diary, actively revised it, fixed the names, everything. she was determined to create a chronicle that would not flinch away from either the horrors or from the beauty of her life. (maybe I was lucky: I had an older edition of the diary and it included the actual commentary on *why* the diary seems so polished and accomplished when it first came out, under the supervision of Otto Frank.)

Honestly I think about this every blue moon, but think of the pain Otto Frank went through to get his daughter’s diary published. It was rough, it was angry, and it ended on such a fucking note. She was hopeful she was thinking about going back to school, and then they were fucking taken. I was just shocked by how sudden the ending was when I read it, but I shouldn’t have been. I knew what happened to her, but I never really thought about what happened. I even remembering right after finishing it googling the day she was dragged out of the attic, and a strange sinking feeling when it lined up with the date in the diary. It was like reading a sentence that ended with … to be continued on the next page, only for the rest of the book to be torn out, and I realized that was essentially what happened to her fucking life.
(Rant below the cut about how badly the education system handles her book/how the general population misses many key factors about the diary.)
the concept of passing is so weird when you’re nonbinary. like I’m never going to “pass.” people will probably always make a wrong assumption about my gender for the rest of my life and the best I can hope for is people being confused???
Can we PLEASE remove the stigma for blue collar work in America?
“You don’t wanna be a garbage collector when you grow up, do you?”
$34,000 a year, no college needed?
God forbid you take an honest job $7,000 above Michigan’s average cost of living line.
“You don’t wanna be a ditch digger.”
Bitch, I was making $15 an hour, post tax, doing exactly that, the fuck is wrong with it? (Other than it was physically exhausting.)
We need to help America, as a whole, understand that college is not, and should not be he only option, and that there is NO SHAME in trade school or even getting a career right out of high school.
I, personally, know plumbers making $80,000+ a year. Better than most 4 year degree workers.
We need plumbers, janitors, truck-drivers, garbage collectors, machinists, to keep this nation running smoothly. And they deserve respect for what they do.
Miss me with your classist bullshit.
“You cannot demand services and then degrade those who provide those services.”
Not sure who said that it but it has always stuck with me because hell it is so true.
Respect.
Literally applies to everything sex work, service work (McDonald’s, waitressing, bartending etc), lower paid medical professionals….. ppl are SO disrespectful to nurses. They do NOT get paid enough to put up with theday bullshit tbh.
So this happened to me a few days ago, and I thought maybe sharing my experience could help someone if this happens to them in the future.
I was checking my Tumblr when suddenly I was logged out from it and given the usual Log In page. When I entered the details to access my blog, this appeared:
My heart skipped a bit. I tried to re-enter the details (maybe I got them wrong the first time), but no, the same message about Termination was shown. I typed my blog URL and got the
ominous
:
Same thing with my sideblogs.
So obviously I was very worried. I contacted the Tumblr support but didn’t get an answer for 48 hours, only an automated reply. I already started mentally saying goodbye to my blogs, my posts and all my followers, when finally I recieved their answer:
(In case you can’t see the picture, it says:
Hello, We’ve restored your account. Thank you for bringing this problem to our attention. We’re sorry that it occurred, and we’ll do our best to make sure that it doesn’t happen again. You should now be able to log in just fine with your email address and password. Please let me know if there’s anything else I can help you with.
My blog was restored and working normally. All my sideblogs were intact , and so were my posts and my followers. The only thing that was lost, is all the conversations by Messages. The people with whom you talked are still there, but all the history of the conversation is gone.
Alright so here is what you should do if this happens to you. Don’t panick like I did Click on the “contact support” link provided in the terminated window. Alternatively, go on Tumblr.com/support.
Politely explain your situation – give your blog URL, your mail, tell what happened exactly. I understand that the situation can be upsetting, but the person who will read the message and try to help you isn’t directly responsible for the termination of your blog. And sending an angry message with insults isn’t the best way to get your blog back either.
Wait for the reply of the team. If you feel like it takes too much time (more than few days for example), try to fill the Help/Support form again.
Once the team is in contact with you, keep the polite tone. Normally if your blog didn’t go againt the Tumblr rules and policies, you should getit back like I did.
Voila 🙂
Guys this is important. 2 of my followers and rp partners got their accounts terminated today so be careful
Tumblr was deemed too full of inappropriate content to be allowed to be downloaded from the app store.
It has this “inappropriate” problem because of rampant porn ad bot accounts. The old solutions were bots to detect image sets with nsfw content, the automatically enabled safe mode, tag filtering for mobile, and wide takedowns of nsfw bots based on words used (that’s why their messages are full of numbers and symbols, to evade this)
Tumblr released their own bot supposedly capable of wiping the ad bots, but it’s taking down many popular blogs, possibly due to sheer amounts of posting or sheer amounts of ad bots in their notes. This bot was likely rushed to be put out.
You are more likely to be accidentally flagged if you post external links, as well. If your acct is taken down you CAN get it back, but it’s a pain. E-mail tumblr support for help with this. It takes down side blogs with the main ones.
I’ll be halting posts for about a week or until this problem is fixed.
